Grab is gradually becoming a real threat to Uber in\u00a0ride-sharing market\u00a0in\u00a0Southeast Asian. The company now runs business\u00a0in 87 cities across seven countries, and just newly got\u00a0an investment from Toyota which will see the two companies team up\u00a0on research.<\/p>\n

Toyota will invest an undisclosed amount as part of Grab’s Series G funding round. Grab plans to raise $2.5 billion, and has\u00a0already got\u00a0$2 billion\u00a0from SoftBank and Didi Chuxing, Uber’s onetime Chinese rival. But the deal with Toyota includes more than just a promise of cash.<\/p>\n

Grab will also share data with Toyota\u00a0on the driving patterns of 100 Toyota cars in its fleet. The data will be analyzed by Toyota and used to improve the automaker’s services, as well as Grab’s own app platform, Grab said.\u00a0Toyota is getting more aggressive in\u00a0tech investments,\u00a0recently starting an investment to focus on\u00a0autonomous driving, AI, and other important\u00a0areas.<\/p>\n

Toyota isn’t the first automaker build partnership\u00a0with Grab. Honda also invested an undisclosed amount last year. At that\u00a0time, Grab said the two companies were working closely on motorcycles.<\/p>\n

As Uber is going to\u00a0get a relief\u00a0from a series of scandals\u00a0under a new CEO, the company is losing market shares\u00a0abroad. Last year, the American company\u00a0sold its Chinese operations to its rival Didi\u00a0Chuxing, and\u00a0recently\u00a0it also\u00a0had to agree\u00a0to merge its Russian operations\u00a0with local firm Yandex.
