A variety of “Turbo” models are mushrooming, although the technology has been relatively mature, but for most of the owners concerned, but still only stay in enjoyment, do not understand that it also needs to be more carefully maintained. For turbocharged models, the following five tips are very important, please keep them in mind!

1 Smashed the gas pedal when start the engine. since the turbocharger is relying on oil to cool down, cold starts when the oil flow is poor, then if the turbocharger is in the high-speed operation, abrasion will be great. Therefore, don’t smashed the gas pedal when start the engine, and don’t put the engine in high speed operation until the engine oil can play a full role in lubrication, so that turbine can extend the life, which is particularly important in winter.

2 A lot of owners like to wait no time to turn off during the long idle time. What they do not know is, when the engine speed is low, turbocharger speed is also low, when the turbo and compressor gas pressure below the bearing body pressure, there will be oil to both ends of the compressor and turbine leakage, the bearing can not be the corresponding lubrication and cooling, while the oil into the compressor may enter the cylinder affect the normal work of the engine, so do not idle for too long.

3 After heading out on the highway in a high-speed and high-load operation, the turbine inlet temperature is very high, the maximum can reach 900 ℃, if the engine immediately stopped, the oil supply will immediately stop, and the turbocharger rotor as the inertia to continue high-speed operation, turbocharger internal retention of the oil will overheat, resulting in damage to bearings and shaft. Therefore, the engine should be idle for about 1 minute, so that the turbocharger rotor speed down.

4 Cleaning the vehicle When the engine and the turbocharger have dust or oil marshes on the outside, be sure not to clean the hot car to prevent the water or cleaning fluid from spilling onto the high temperature turbine to cause deformation or even damage.

5 Don’t follow the rules of using high-quality oil. turbine speed is usually as high as 150,000 / min or more, and most of the car turbines are using floating bearings, that is entirely lubricated by lubricants, so the choice of high quality oil is particularly important. Synthetic engine oil is superior to ordinary mineral oil 3 times the stability of the high temperature and high speed engine to maintain a stable lubrication, provide good lubrication for the turbocharger and the engine, thereby reducing friction and abrasion.

ECMOVO turbo electric actuators are designed to fully meet the OE specification and are built in accordance with European Standards. The ECMOVO turbo electric actuator provides customized design solutions which allows the valve to meet customers’ particular requirements for turbocharger repair and remanufacture. ECMOVO actuators have the comparable OE quality but the most cost-effective price. .

The pressure of the exhaust turbocharger is directly related to the exhaust gas flow to the exhaust turbocharger turbine and the resulting exhaust turbocharger speed. Both the speed and mass of the exhaust gas flow are directly dependent on the engine speed and the engine load.

The continuously operated engine vacuum pump generates a vacuum and stores it in two vacuum accumulators, which ensures that these vacuum control components do not adversely affect the brake assist function. The exhaust gas bypass flow can affect the flow rate of the exhaust gas delivered to the turbine. When the required supercharging pressure is reached, the exhaust gas bypass valve opens and passes a portion of the exhaust gas stream through the turbine. This prevents the compressor speed from being continuously increased by increasing the exhaust gas flow.

The engine management system regulates the boost pressure through the exhaust gas bypass valve. The exhaust gas bypass valve is operated by a vacuum tank and is controlled by an engine management system via an electronic pneumatic pressure transducer (EP-DW).

ECMOVO produces a wide variety of turbo electric actuators that applies for most car makes and models. In addition ECMOVO turbo actuators are all customized made totally according to customer’s particular demands.

The most common symptoms related to lack of turbocharger performance are lack of engine power, excessive exhaust smoke from excessive oil consumption, and (if applicable) the ingestion of coolant from a water-cooled bearing housing.

When dealing with a lack of engine power, first determine if the engine is operating correctly before blaming the turbo for causing the issue. If the engine runs well, then there is an excellent chance that the cause of the lost power or excessive exhaust smoke is in the turbocharger system.

When setting out to determine what’s making the turbochanger perform badly, always conduct a physical examination of the component. Check all inlet connections for a tight fit from the turbocharger to the engine. Loose hose clamps or compromised hoses will let boost escape.

During your examination, look for telltale signs of an exhaust leak upstream from the turbine housing back to the engine.

Exhaust leaks limit turbo performance since not all the exhaust gas is flowing to the turbocharger’s turbine. This, in turn, greatly affects its ability to compress combustion air.

When looking at the system, be sure to check the integrity of the turbocharger’s intercooler (CAC). It’s possible for it to get a crack in a tank or a small pin hole in a tube (particularly a problem in over-the-road vehicles). It may be necessary to remove the CAC and pressure-check it as you would a radiator.

If an oil seal on a turbo’s compressor does go bad, it will force lubricant into the CAC. Wash that lubricant out since it not only causes excessive exhaust smoke but also limits the thermal conductivity of the unit.

Turbo lag can make even the highest performing turbocharged engine feel sluggish and unresponsive. This is because larger turbos take longer to spool, thus creating a time gap between when you hit the throttle and when your engine generates full horsepower response. Though some turbo lag is inevitable, it’s certainly possible to reduce turbo lag with a few bolt-on engine modifications.

Replace your turbo vehicle’s exhaust downpipe with a smaller-diameter unit. A downpipe with a smaller inner diameter offers less airflow, slightly reducing top-end horsepower. However, the smaller pipe diameter increases the speed of exhaust flow, thus allowing your turbocharger to spool faster, increasing response and low-end power.

Replace your stock blow-off valve with an aftermarket unit. Stock blow-off valves are often made of flimsy plastic, designed with noise reduction in mind. Aftermarket units are more responsive, allowing your turbo to pressurize the intake tract more efficiently.

Purchase a new intercooler kit for your turbo vehicle. The intercooler system is what most thoroughly affects turbo response. Certain aftermarket units are designed with the shortest piping route and least amount of pressure drop in mind, making for quicker turbo response.

Warning: Engine and exhaust modifications are illegal in some locations. Always check with local and state emissions laws prior to modifying your turbo system.

A few decades ago, any car with the word ‘TURBO’ emblazoned upon its rump signified something rather special. The eclectic mix of performance and prestige translated into instant envy, especially within the cut-and-thrust world of a typical 1980’s corporate car park. These days, almost every diesel car is fitted with at least one turbocharger and many drivers are even unaware of its existence, until failure brings forth a sizable repair bill.

In simple terms, a turbocharger is a miniature compressor. An engine’s spent exhaust gases enter the turbo, which spins one side of a turbine. The other side of the turbine force-feeds the engine with air, so that more oxygen can be burnt with the fuel. The result allows the engine to develop higher efficiency and significantly more power. Yet, a turbocharger’s turbine rotates many thousands of times more than that of the engine itself. Several months ago, during a visit to a respected car tuning business, I discovered a turbocharger rig, which also serves as an efficient workshop heater, which demonstrates the extremes of both speed and temperature that a turbocharger tolerates. The start of the video shows the turbine being rotated by compressed air alone, prior to it being powered by paraffin, and yes, the noise really was deafening…

It was most dramatic but, to protect your turbocharger against premature failure, follow these simple driving tips:

When starting your car from cold, do not race the engine immediately from idle. Allow between 5-10 seconds for the engine oil to reach the turbocharger.

Never operate the engine under full power until the engine oil has warmed thoroughly. When the lubricant is cold, it remains thick and gloopy and cannot lubricate the turbocharger effectively, until warmed and thinned.

Old and tired oil cannot protect the turbocharger adequately. Therefore, do not extend the oil change interval beyond that recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.

Low-grade oil cannot protect the turbocharger adequately. Therefore, always use oil of not only the correct viscosity but also to the correct quality API specification (the details are noted within the vehicle handbook and also on the sides of canisters).

A turbocharger works its hardest during sustained high speeds. After a long motorway drive, it is possible that a turbocharger might be glowing orangey-red hot. Shutting the engine off immediately after a long run, such as when stopping at a motorway service station, might cause severe damage, because the internal turbine will not have slowed down sufficiently, plus the extreme heat generated may not been given sufficient opportunity to dissipate. Always allow the engine to idle for at least 30 seconds, prior to switching off the ignition. If your car is equipped with ‘stop-start’ technology, disable it in this instance, should it be switchable.

Never ‘blip’ the throttle, prior to switching off the ignition. This makes the turbocharger’s turbines accelerate but, when the ignition is cut, you starve the still-rotating turbine of lubricant. This can damage the bearings and increases the risk of premature failure substantially.

What is a turbo actuator?
A turbo actuator is a valve that diverts exhaust gases away from the turbine wheel – helping to control the speed of the turbine and prevent it from over-speeding, and in turn, regulating the speed of the compressor and so the boost pressure. This helps to protect the turbocharger from unnecessary wear, by capping the maximum boost pressure of the turbo at a safe level.
A turbocharger uses a vehicle’s exhaust to power a turbine, which forces more air into the vehicle’s engine, to help it go faster.

What does a turbo actuator do?
The turbo actuator does a simple but vital job – it acts as a pressure relief valve that controls the boost output of your turbo, diverting excess exhaust gases away from the turbine wheel.
This controls the speed of the turbine, preventing it from over-speeding, and regulating the speed of the compressor. Ultimately, this helps to protect the turbocharger from unnecessary wear and tear, by capping the maximum boost pressure of the turbo at a safe level.

How a turbo actuator works?
A turbo actuator is a fairly simple piece of equipment – it features a spring and a diaphragm. The spring holds the wastegate shut until the boost pressure reaches a set level, and then opens, allowing the gas to escape and reducing the boost pressure.

Turbo actuator problems
As with all components, things can go wrong with your turbo actuator.
Over time, the pressure and heat will start to take its toll, which can weaken the spring. This can lead to the wastegate opening earlier than it should, reducing the boost pressure and performance of your turbo.
The diaphragm can also fail, meaning that the valve will no longer open. This can lead to the boost pressure rising to the point that it causes serious, catastrophic damage to your engine!
A faulty electronic actuator will cause the vanes to open even at low loads or fail to open the vanes when the load is high. This will cause your vehicle to lose power and the engine light on your dashboard will light up. A defective turbocharger electronic actuator should be replaced at once to prevent any further damage to the turbocharger and the engine.

Are there any alternatives to replace the turbo actuator?
Most often, A separate OE actuator is not available in the market, if you need to have a replace, you have to buy the whole turbo unit at a quite high price which is not that necessary. Usually remanufactured turbo is just a retrofit of turbine vanes and the exterior. But because of the technology bottleneck, electronic turbo actuators can not be remanufactured so that it has to be remained the original one. In auto aftermarket, it’s not hard to find out a high quality turbo charger, but not for the actuator. Especially to seek out the very suitable actuator with superior performance and high matching. Ecmovo electronic actuators are well redesigned and fully meet the OE specifications. Quality has been well improved to achieve the same or even longer serve life compared to OE. All our actuators are well-built and thoroughly tested and come with a two years warranty. More importantly, we help customers to lower cost up to 40%. Ecmovo actuator is always the optima alternative option to replace the turbo actuator at the most unbeatable prices.

Let’s begin by describing what a turbo wastegate is. A wastegate is essentially a device that bypasses some exhaust flow around the turbine section of a turbocharger to control maximum boost. A wastegate is usually controlled by a pressure actuator that is connected to manifold pressure. The wastegate is normally closed, held shut by a spring inside the actuator canister. When preset pressure limits are exceeded, the actuator progressively opens the wastegate, allowing exhaust flow to bypass the turbine, thus regulating manifold boost pressure. On the surface, it sounds like a simple premise, and in fact, a wastegate is a simple device. The problem comes from the pressure in the exhaust system, called turbine inlet pressure that can bear against the valve, overpowering the spring in the actuator, and forcing the wastegate open at lower than intended boost levels.

Original equipment turbocharger wastegate actuators are selected or engineered for a specified boost level and turbine inlet pressure. To keep costs down, such actuators are usually just big enough to do the job at the stock boost levels. If the turbocharger boost is increased for additional airflow and performance, the stock wastegate actuator is frequently incapable of holding the wastegate fully closed until the higher boost level is reached. This happens because turbine inlet pressure also increases as boost pressure rises. The fix is to use a bigger spring in the wastegate actuator to hold it closed until the desired peak boost is achieved, however, that also requires a bigger actuator diaphragm to override the heavier spring when the desired boost level is reached. That’s why Banks created the Big Head actuator that’s used on many of its diesel power systems.

The net affect is that the turbocharger comes up to peak boost more quickly and then maintains that boost level throughout the engine’s RPM range for optimum mid-range torque and top end performance.

Faulty or damaged actuators are the cause of many of the turbo problems, but they can be easy to overlook.

The turbo actuator acts as a pressure relief valve, which ultimately controls the boost output of a turbocharger. It works by holding the wastegate shut until the required boost level is reached, and then opening, releasing the exhaust gases and slowing the turbine.

After prolonged use, the actuator can become worn, corroded and weakened, which is what you see in this picture. When this happens, the actuator will stop working properly, and can allow the exhaust gases to escape prematurely, reducing the efficiency and output of the turbo.

In other cases, the diaphragm of the actuator can become damaged. This can cause serious engine damage, as the turbo will no longer have any boost control. This means the pressure will keep building, and the turbine will keep spinning until something breaks, or the engine management takes over!

In most cases, the best solution is to replace the worn actuator with a new one. The shiny new actuator you can see in the picture is a new Ecmovo actuator – which is what we use when we’re replacing damaged actuators. This high quality, reliable and durable actuator helps to provide greater sensitivity and better turbo response when it comes to managing boost pressures.

Items Needed
Screwdriver
Optionally, VCDS (VAG-COM or VAG-COM Diagnostic System), VAG-COM cable, and computer

Testing a Turbo Actuator
You can suspect that you need to test your turbocharger actuator if your turbocharger starts to behave differently.

If your turbocharger starts kicking in at low speeds, or it suddenly stops when your vehicle is at high speeds, your actuator may need to be recalibrated or replaced. To test your turbo actuator, follow these instructions:

1, First, make sure the vehicle is turned off. Then, open the hood and find the engine’s turbocharger. The actuator is a small compartment off to the side of the turbocharger’s body.

2, Press the turbo actuator with your thumb. If your actuator moves just under half an inch, everything is fine. If it moves too much or too easily, you are not getting the full benefits of your turbocharger, and you may need to adjust the actuator. Alternately, ask someone to turn the vehicle on while the hood is open. Watch what the actuator does. Because the vehicle isn’t in motion, the actuator should open (move) to release the extra exhaust, rather than feeding it into the turbocharger.

3, Finally, many vehicles are able to interface with a software package called VCDS, formerly known as VAG-COM or the VAG-COM Diagnostic System. This software is used as a diagnostic tool for vehicles that may be malfunctioning. If you have a copy of VCDS on your computer, use a VAG-COM cable to attach your computer to your vehicle. You should be able to test the turbo actuator using VCDS.

Replacing a turbo Actuator
If your turbo actuator is malfunctioning, you’ll probably need to replace it. To do so, follow these simple steps:

1, Unscrew the bolts holding the actuator in place, and then use a screwdriver to remove the actuator clip. From there, the old actuator should pull easily out of its place.

2, Place the new actuator in, engage the clip, and bolt it in place. As you do so, make sure the length of the new actuator’s arm is the same as that of the old actuator (just screw it to
lengthen or shorten it).

You should be able to replace the turbo actuator without removing the actual turbocharger, and the whole process usually takes about 10 minutes.

Testing a turbo actuator is a good way to make sure that your engine’s turbocharger is behaving optimally. While testing the actuator can involve expensive software, it is just a matter of conducting basic observations. Because it’s such as simple process, if you suspect your turbocharger is malfunctioning, the turbo actuator should be one of the first things you check. And if your actuator is broken, replace it.
